The problem
Blocked drains are a major cause of waterlogging in Indian towns and campuses. Plastic and leaves choke the drain, water rises without anyone noticing, and by the time people see the overflow the street or building is already flooded.
How it works
A removable waste basket at the drain inlet catches plastic and leaves. Two water sensors fixed at different heights watch the water level. When water reaches the first sensor, the system gives an early warning with a light and a slow beep. When it reaches the second sensor, it raises a critical alarm and a motor-driven flap opens an alternate channel so the extra water can escape. The flap closes by itself once the water has gone back down.
Key features
- Two-stage alert: early warning and critical level
- Green, yellow and red status lights that anyone can understand
- Slow beep for warning, fast beep for critical
- Automatic overflow flap that opens at the critical level
- Flap closes only after the water has stayed low for a few seconds, so it does not keep opening and closing
- Removable basket that keeps waste out and is easy to empty
- Start-up self-test of every light, the buzzer and the flap
- Live sensor readings on the computer for easy calibration
