WattSurge — PZEM-004T AC Smart Energy Sentinel
About this project
WattSurge is an ESP32-based AC power quality and energy monitoring station that reads six parameters simultaneously from a PZEM-004T v3.0 module over Modbus RTU serial — AC RMS voltage, RMS current, active power, accumulated energy, line frequency, and power factor. All six metrics are displayed live on a 16×2 I2C LCD that cycles through three pages (V/I → P/PF → F/E) every two seconds, and streamed to a six-card browser dashboard with 2-second auto-refresh. A hardware Energy Reset route clears the PZEM-004T's internal kWh counter via a Modbus command. A three-LED status column (green/yellow/red) indicates Wi-Fi connection, AC signal presence, and over-power alert. Students learn Modbus RTU framing, UART level-shifting for 5V→3.3V interfacing, AC power factor concepts, and energy tariff calculations in one integrated project.
