ThumbVault — AS608 Biometric Fingerprint Vault
About this project
ThumbVault turns an Arduino Uno and an AS608 optical fingerprint sensor into a standalone three-mode biometric access control system. The sensor stores fingerprint templates in its own onboard flash memory — no external storage required — and supports up to 127 unique IDs. Three tactile push buttons select mode and trigger actions: VERIFY mode continuously polls for a finger touch and runs a 1:N database search in under 500 ms, returning the matching ID and confidence score; ENROLL mode captures two images of the same finger, creates a fused template, and stores it at the user-selected ID (1–127); DELETE mode removes a stored template by ID. A 16×2 I2C LCD displays all prompts and results so the system operates entirely without a serial monitor. A common-cathode RGB LED provides colour-coded feedback (green = granted, red = denied, blue = enrolling), and an active buzzer plays a three-note ascending fanfare on success or a low reject buzz on failure. The Adafruit Fingerprint library handles the UART packet framing to the sensor; students interact with the enrol/search/delete API to learn how biometric template storage differs from password-based authentication.
