SkyFix Arduino GPS NMEA Parser
About this project
SkyFix Arduino GPS NMEA Parser locks onto GPS satellites and displays your live coordinates, altitude, speed, satellite count, and UTC time on a rotating 16×2 LCD screen. The NEO-6M GPS module streams standard NMEA 0183 sentences over UART at 9600 baud — SkyFix parses them using TinyGPS++ to extract latitude, longitude, altitude, and speed. A green LED blinks while searching for satellites and glows solid once a fix is acquired; a buzzer beeps once at that first moment of lock. The LCD cycles through four information screens every 4 seconds: coordinates, altitude and speed, satellite count and date, UTC time and HDOP accuracy. The Serial Monitor echoes all raw NMEA sentences alongside the parsed values and generates a clickable Google Maps URL from your coordinates — paste it into a browser and see exactly where you are. This project demonstrates five concepts core to CSE: the UART serial protocol, NMEA 0183 sentence structure, string tokenisation and checksum verification, the SoftwareSerial bit-banging library, and the WGS84 coordinate reference system. Build time: 3.5 hours.
